My God Maiwand!: Operations of the South Afghanistan Field Force, by Maxwell, Leigh. Cooper. Used - Good. Former Library book. Shows some signs of wear, and may have some markings on the inside.

A recently published and very readable book ("My God - Maiwand!") which has just come into my hands reminds me, not only, of the old man's reminiscences but also reinforces my opinion that the Principles of Battle should have been included in the instruction of potential officers.

ISBN: My God. Maiwand. Afghans. Hi, In my last blog entry I talked a little about the scenic item/diorama of the Battle of Maiwand I was working on and why (you can read about it HERE). Well, since then I've finished a unit of 8 Afghans byWargames Foundry and 11.

Getting back to Maiwand, after reading the article about it in the VMS journal, I ordered a copy of the newly published My God - Maiwand. by Colonel Leigh Maxwell. I loved the book when I read it as a 15 year-old inand still love it now, so it would seem refighting Maiwand in miniature would be an obvious thing for me to have done long ago.

"Maiwand Day heads to the other "LA" " Topic. 17 Posts. My God indeed, Klibanophoros. (how I love that book) Thanks for the well-wishes, Shagnasty.

I am going to try hard to eat well once I get there, though en route probably not so much. Thanks for wishing me luck, Igor. The car is now weighed down with hundreds of your little pieces of.

The Road to Kabul: The Second Afghan War by Brian Robson is a good single-volume history of the entire war, and up-to-date, published in I would also recommend "MY GOD--MAIWAND!" by Leigh Maxwell.

There are a couple of more recent works on Maiwand which are also good, but I still love that book. This pics below will be me entry into the painting comp. For those that aren't familiar with the events of the Battle of Maiwand during the Second Afghan War, the 66th Regiment of Foot were routed and many died defending the gh, it has to be said, the events that took place during the route are not crystal clear.

The 19th Lancers is an armoured regiment of the Pakistanit was known as 19th King George V's Own Lancers, which was a regular cavalry regiment of the British Indian was formed inby the amalgamation of 18th King George's Own Lancers and 19th Lancers (Fane's Horse). On Partition of India inthe regiment was allotted to ance: British Crown, Pakistan.

Until now, the most easily accessible account of the "fatal battle" was Leigh Maxwell's excellent "My God - Maiwand". Now we also have "Maiwand: The Last Stand of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment in Afghanistan, " by Richard J Stacpoole-Ryding, which for the first time, I think, looks at the Battle of Maiwand specifically in relation to Dr Watson's regiment/5(3).

My father had previously written two books, both of which were well received: “My God - Maiwand!” about the British defeat at Maiwand in the Second Afghan War “The Ashanti Ring” concerning the campaigns – of Sir Garnet Wolseley and the group of officers around him, on the Gold Coast, and in South Africa and Egypt.

User Review - Flag as inappropriate I enjoyed both the variety and the content of this well-written collection of biographical tales of the past.

The historical context of each subject is not given in much depth, but the facets of each story intrigue, and the different characters, the saints, the scallywags and those in between, shine through clearly.4/5(2).

I have said before that I consider myself a reader first and foremost, but reading ends up in -or leads directly to- wargaming what I have read. Since I was 15 or so and read Colonel Leigh Maxwell's excellent book, "My God--Maiwand!" around the time of the th anniversary, I've been somewhat obsessed with this battle.

This blog site chronicles what I imagine will be the final expression of that obsession. 'My God - Maiwand!', Leigh Maxwell, (London: Leo Cooper, ) [H] Dr Watson and Maiwand. I disagree with some of the emphasis in Hopkirk's book, notably in my conclusions in the following extracts: 1. "The Game was indeed one of high stakes: the players came into close territorial contact and friction was inevitable. Not my Painting But Too Lovely Not To See!!
